“Try to Praise the Mutilated World”

So often, when we are facing overwhelming problems, we want answers that come from a technical perspective—what are the structures we need, the policies that guide, the groups that will administer—technical answers sound really attractive. We all want an instruction manual for our lives because it seems like it’s the lack of knowledge that is keeping us from achieving the vision of the future that we hope for. But technical fixes will not solve our race problem, which is not to say we shouldn’t implement technical changes in our system, but they will not solve problems with a spiritual origin. Technical fixes must be accompanied by a spiritual willingness to be transformed if we want them to work.
